The Refinishing Process

free evaluation   The first step: Free Evaluation
The first step of the refinishing process is a thorough evaluation of the existing paint. We determine how many layers of paint have been applied, and if there is a shellac layer protecting the wood. We do this with a "swatch test" where we take off an area of paint (from 3 inches up to 1 foot square) to determine the best way to approach the job. We do a visual inventory as to how many walls, moldings, doors, etc. are involved in this job. This process allows us to give you an estimate of costs involved.

We can work in the way that best suits your schedule - by working to get the project done as soon as possible, or working during selected hours. We will agree to a working schedule before the project begins.

paint stripping   Second Step: Paint Stripping

The second step is to prepare the house for the paint stripping. All areas and carpets are covered and taped off to assure that your home remains clean and livable throught the process of refinishing. We make sure that all stripping waste is disposed of properly. No chemicals are left unattended.

refinishing   Third step: Refinishing

After striping we retouch all areas, checking for nicks, dents and apply the necessary plasters and fillers. At this time the wood may be sanded and filled as needed.

Stain & Lacquor   Finish: Stain & Lacquor

Finally, we stain the wood to match the agreed upon stain sample. We then inspect the stain for any small spots that may have been missed and hand-retouch where necessary. After checking that the stain is satisfactory, we either apply the wax or lacquor.
